Life & Death in the Tongue
Proverbs 18:21 says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The tongue can be used as a weapon to harm and destroy or as a tool to build and heal. What kind of impact do your words have? Sometimes we say things and don’t even give it much thought. Before you open your mouth, you need to think about what is going to come out.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Maybe you’ve said it, but do you believe it? Someone revised this into, “Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break your spirit.”
The power of the words that was spoken into our lives or words we spoke into someone else’s life. Words like, you are stupid, you will never amount to anything, you just like your daddy. Maybe you were at the other end of the spectrum with words like, you can be anything, you are smart, I’m pride of you. Regardless of the words you have had to live with them. Some words are not easy to overcome. But we need to know the words God speak
s about us. “You are fearfully and wonderfully made”, “You are above and not beneath”, “You are more than a conquer”. Every other word that was spoken to you may have been a truth or a lie, but God words are truth and he can heal all your broken wounds, but you have to replace them with the words he has spoken about you and the only way to do that is through relationship. You have to have a relationship with Christ, read the word of God, meditate on it, so you can change the negative into a positive. So, he can change your heart. “From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”. A lot of the time when we hurt people or people hurt us with their tongue it’s because we/they are speaking from a broken place. I place that only God can mend.
God's Word speaks to every generation; it never changes. His Word will judge us righteously and cause us to be accountable to an everlasting God that never fails. Jesus promises, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away” (Matthew 24:25).
So, before we speak or allow others to speak into our lives, let’s make sure it is to build up and not to destroy. Be encourage!
