Selfishness

Selfishness defined by Webster is having or shown concern only for yourself and not for the needs or feelings of other people. Selfishness is solely focused on satisfying its own flesh. Selfishness is infectious. If one person is selfish, it is likely others will soon become selfish as well. 1 Kings 21:1-5 Ahab. An example of one whose selfishness led him to be concerned about things before he was concerned about people. King Ahab coveted Naboth's vineyard and pouted when he could not get it (1 Kings 21). His wicked wife Jezebel killed Naboth and then gave his vineyard to her husband as a gift. He was ecstatic. He gave no thought to Naboth or his family. He had what he wanted. Too many people place undue emphasis on things of this world and too little on people. Jesus said one cannot serve God and mammoth too. (Matt. 6:24) Jesus is concerned about souls not things. It is easy to be greedy. Instead of caring about people or God, we only think about ourselves. We can be selfish in our time, in our knowledge, with people, and sure enough with our money. Opposite of Selfishness is Self – Sacrifice Self -sacrifice is the giving up of one’s interests or wishes in order to help others or to advance a cause. Being a Christian cause for self – sacrifice, it is putting God and others ahead of you. It is about denying yourself. Jesus was relentless in giving of Himself. Let’s be more like Him and see the world turn around.
